Cocktail strainers are metal bartending tools that filter unwanted debris (herb leaves, ice, fruit bits, pulp) from a finished cocktail. There are three basic types of strainers: a Hawthorne strainer, designed as a handled metal disc with a wire coil for filtering; a julep strainer, which looks like a large, perforated metal spoon; and fine mesh strainers, which are typically used as second filters for extra-smooth cocktails.
